Approved re-use centres
Why promote ‘approved’ re-use centres?
Professionalising and developing approved re-use centres and networks will help create significant job opportunities throughout Europe. Support for this vision is enshrined within the current EU Waste Framework Directive:
“Member States shall take measures, as appropriate, to promote the re-use of products and preparing for re-use activities, notably by encouraging the establishment and support of re-use and repair networks…”
Waste Framework Directive (2008)
Unfortunately, this voluntary approach has not led to enough concrete action. RREUSE wants the EU to put in place measures to ensure that all Member States do much more to encourage the development of the sector.
We use the term ‘approved’ to distinguish between formal re-use organisations as opposed to illicit and illegal operators. From consultation with re-use centres across 15 Member States we have come up with some principles that re-use centres should abide by.
EU policy agenda
Raising awareness about the importance of developing approved re-use centres and networks transcends all the policy areas that RREUSE focuses on, in particular EU waste, product and employment rules.
