Making digital skills part of everyday work

Across Europe, it’s getting harder to find a job without basic digital skills. For many people who haven’t had the chance to learn them, this can feel like an extra barrier. In Finland, Kierrätyskeskus decided to turn that barrier into an opportunity.

Instead of reserving digital tools for office staff, Kierrätyskeskus brings them into every role because digital skills are for everyone.

A major driver of this shift has been Kierrätyskeskus’ nationwide online shop. The web store has expanded its customer base across Finland and created new, more digitised tasks: employees learn to handle online orders, use scanners, update product information and navigate different digital systems.

To make this possible, the organisation offers hands-on training. People who are new to technology start with basic programmes such as Excel, Word and Teams. Those working more closely with the online shop go a step further, learning about information security and other specialised skills. Along the way, they also pick up practical job-search skills, from preparing a CV to getting ready for video interviews or setting up a LinkedIn profile.

A big part of the work happens on the human side. Many employees arrive convinced that “digital isn’t for them”. Kierrätyskeskus takes time to break down this negative perception, starting with small and achievable steps, and celebrating progress. Group meetings, peer support and mentoring between colleagues help create a learning culture where it’s okay to ask questions and experiment.

The impact is visible both inside and outside the organisation. Internally, better digital skills have improved communication and the use of tools like Teams and Moodle, making everyday work smoother and supporting the growth of the online shop. For employees, gaining confidence with digital devices opens doors to new jobs, further training and higher incomes. It also boosts self-esteem and mental well-being.
