The patient work of changing how a community repairs and reuses

Something shifted in České Budějovice: when residents had furniture they no longer needed, more and more of them were donating it rather than throwing it away. That shift didn't happen by itself.

Kabinet CB was founded in the capital of South Bohemia with a dual purpose: to give quality second-hand furniture to families who couldn't afford new, and to create work for people who had been pushed out of the conventional labour market. Kabinet CB didn't just open a second-hand shop; it embedded itself in the life of the city. It ran workshops in furniture renovation, upholstery, and sewing, open to anyone curious enough to show up, designed for different ages and different levels of experience.

The results became visible in the donation data. In České Budějovice, Kaplice, and nearby municipalities, the volume of furniture being brought in for reuse grew. People who once might have arranged a bulky waste collection were now ringing Kabinet CB instead: a genuine behavioural shift.

The furniture that comes through Kabinet CB doesn't only reach paying customers. Through a partnership with the Furniture Bank of the South Bohemian Region, items prepared for reuse are distributed free of charge to families using social services and to nonprofit organisations across the region. In 2020, that channel delivered 50 tonnes of furniture and household goods to people who needed them.

Kabinet CB is also a founding member of Reuse Federace, the Czech national network of furniture banks and reuse centres. What the organisation learned in South Bohemia became part of the knowledge base that the network now shares across the country. Local roots can grow into something much larger.
