Focus Project
The Focus Project based in Creggan Enterprises at the Ráth Mór Centre, runs a community school uniform reuse scheme based around circular economy principles of reuse, repair and waste reduction.
The project collects donated school uniforms, shoes, coats and bags from local families and schools, then sorts and redistributes them through an annual community pop-up uniform shop and ongoing support for families throughout the year. Volunteers play an important role in the initiative by helping to collect, sort, organise and prepare donated items for reuse, aswell as working as staff within the shop. This creates opportunities for community involvement, skills development and greater awareness of sustainable practices at a local level. By extending the life of school clothing and encouraging the reuse of good quality items, the scheme helps reduce textile waste, keeps usable materials out of landfill and reduces the need for new clothing purchases. Items are checked, cleaned and prepared for reuse, with minor repairs carried out where needed to ensure uniforms remain suitable for continued use. Alongside the environmental benefits, the initiative also supports local families with the rising cost of school uniforms while helping to promote more sustainable attitudes towards clothing reuse within the community. The project demonstrates how community-led initiatives can combine social impact with practical circular economy action through textile reuse, repair and redistribution.
