The mission of St Columbs Park House is to empower local people to become active citizens, changemakers and peacemakers. The heart of this is a range of sustainable development goals, with peace and justice central to the organisation but climate action, zero hunger, quality education and good health & wellbeing as strong pillars of support.
At the core of this is the work we do with volunteers from the local community centred around our natural environment with workshops varying from gardening, woodwork and outdoor play and bringing the outdoors in, as well as working with a wide range of ages and abilities to improve social interactions, mental wellbeing and personal health. Through this, we focus on doing more with less, harnessing nature and resources around us to improve the circular economy locally as well as developing healthy habits. We reuse and repurpose reclaimed materials, such as pallets, in projects and DIY workshops, to save money, promote good environmental practice and to educate the community on resources. Examples of this include our recent workshop making reindeer decorations from the trunk and branches of a tree that had fallen in a recent storm, volunteers making mosaic pathways with old discarded and broken tiles, and making planters and garden sculptures from wooden pallets. We are always looking for innovative ways to reuse resources that would otherwise go to waste. We also have two booking lending libraries, for kids and adults, to promote sharing and circularity.
