RREUSE co-signed a joint open letter with environmental, social and waste management organisations urging the European Parliament to bring forward the plenary vote on the revised Waste Framework Directive, currently postponed to October.
The delay comes at a critical time. Across Europe, social enterprises, recyclers and local authorities are overwhelmed by growing volumes of used textiles, with too few options to reuse or recycle them. Without clear legislation and dedicated funding, good-quality textiles risk being lost to incineration or landfill, and those working to give them a second life are left in limbo.
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes for textiles are urgently needed to provide a stable framework for investment, partnerships and infrastructure development. Every month of inaction slows down the shift to circular systems and puts both jobs and resources at risk.
The letter calls for urgent action to prevent further delays and provide the legal and financial certainty necessary to scale up reuse, repair, and recycling across Europe.
